    Piper Cherokee 140 - Suffolk, Va - 7Jan 23

I agree...I just feel like there is more to the story, like you said he might not of understood the situation, or maybe the pilot had bad information.

    Piper Cherokee 140 - Suffolk, Va - 7Jan 23

Weird one...seems like the pilot recognized there was a problem, but then ignored it (and the mechanic)???

Update AM Radio overlay maps available - 22 Jan 23

Cool I will have to try them with whatever new efb I go with…which reminds me, I think I’ll start a thread in a day or two looking for suggestions from those flyers like me that bailed from foreflight…I’m still undecided what to switch to.

Update AM Radio overlay maps available - 22 Jan 23

Cool...but I just dropped Foreflight! LOL. I had something similar saved on Foreflight of all the clear-channel AM stations...not so much for guiding, but for using my ADF for entertainment.

Is your airplane kept in a hangar?

I'm new at a nearby Class C (Flint Bishop KFNT). $200 a month for a large, insulated, T-hangar. The small T-hangars rent for $166 a month (no insulation), the biggest hangars rent for $225 a month (only a foot or two bigger than mine in each direction). To get these prices, you have to pay...

    ATR-72 - Pokhara Nepal - 15 Jan 23

    That's the video I saw.

    ATR-72 - Pokhara Nepal - 15 Jan 23

There’s actually video from inside the aircraft of the crash…someone was doing a “FaceTime live” recording. I don’t recommend watching it, it’s quite horrifying.

Morse code growing in the US

Admittedly, ham radio no longer holds it's mystic appeal...now you can just pick up a cell phone, and call anyone, anywhere in the world. I have a portable HF set up, and every now and then, on a nice day, I'll set it up on the back deck and make a few contacts around the country...but more...

Morse code growing in the US

In my teens and twenties, I would get up at 4am, before school, to chat by Morse code on 80 meters (a low band frequency that worked well after dark). Admittedly, I never got very good (I could comfortably receive at about 12 wpm), but like the article said I liked doing it because I felt like...

    Mechanic rant (lite)

In my 30 or so years of flying, I have had some really good mechanics (and a couple of bad ones). Obviously I avoid the bad ones, keep the good ones, and with the good ones typically develop great long-term owner/mechanic relationships. But, my (slight) rant: I have yet to get a mechanic that...

    Bonanza A36 - Harlan KY - 3 Nov 22

Peter can answer for himself, but isn't it also obvious from his statements that he finds it inherently dangerous? Or are you saying that it is not?

    Bonanza A36 - Harlan KY - 3 Nov 22

The story reminds me of a case that occurred near me. Witnesses said the guy, a non-instrument rated pilot, had been flying/filing IFR for years, letting the autopilot do the flying. It caught up with him when the ceilings were too low at his home airport. I wonder if he didn't know/didn't...

    Pilots have lower emotional IQ

"Military Intelligence", "near miss", "pretty ugly", "cheap airplane"...the list goes on.

Started teaching in a Cherokee 140 today.

Hmm, I've never noticed the cherokee more work to slow down (but not saying that it isn't, just hadn't noticed)...is your Cardinal a retract? That big "barn door" front gear door has to help slow things down.

    Airplane recommendation

"2-place with luggage" usually is best handled by a small 4 place. How about a Grumman AA5, like a tiger? Fixed gear, fixed prop, but still respectable speed.

Are high vs low wing preferences generic or colored by specific designs?

Although I agree with @Bob Noel that "it depends", under most situations I prefer a low wing. Perhaps its a learned bias on my part, but I've always felt that high-wings represent smaller aircraft, while low wings tend to be more prevalent in larger aircraft. I like to satisfy a fantasy that...

    Airplane Value

I only meant "beginner" as a plane that often has a new-to-planes type of first owner. I loved my little Cherokee, and it flew us all over the country, in all sorts of weather. It was so confidence building, that I probably pushed my minimums a bit in it, because it really seemed to be able to...

    Flight through Monument Valley, 2016

Monument Valley is on our bucket list. But, its a two long days of GA flight to get there for us, so we will have to plan for at least a week vacation just to include travel time.

    Flying pictures worth sharing.

I'm too chicken to fly out over the ocean like you did for the Ocracoke shot! Even flying over the sound was bothersome to me.

    Airplane Value

That's funny that you called the bank, as I did too! Some history on me: I'm a retired police detective/fraud investigator. Even though I knew full well that having the guy wire me the money was a one-way transaction, I called the bank anyway just to be sure I wasn't missing something. The...
