The local talk on this one is that the student completely froze and would not let go of the controls. They were both incredibly lucky as the nose of the plane went through the roof into the open stairwell and wings stopped it. So they were uninjured and hanging in the air.

Wow, that's like one in a million chance of surviving. From 75 feet AGL. They'd be dead if they'd missed that building. You can see from this picture clearly how the building absorbed the energy of the impact.
