I became interested in this old airstrip after seeing it on the Airfields Freeman website. I wondered if I might be able to land there when visiting the Grand Canyon Lodge on the north rim, which is otherwise about a 2 hour drive from the Kanab UT (KKNB) airport.
We visited the site of this old strip from 1926 on October 7 and my wife and I had the chance to take some photos of the remains of the strip and some artifacts.
One can still make out the line of the main runway 17/35 from Hwy 67:
Near the north end of this primary runway was an old concrete cross:
Along with the remnants of a windsock hoop nearby:
The distinction between the old runway and the surrounding meadow is still quite visible after nearly 100 years:
My overall sense was that one could perhaps land a taildragger with tundra tires on the southern and northern third, but I won't be trying it in my Cardinal any time soon. (In an emergency, probably one of the better choices up on the Kaibab plateau however.)
