I could never figure out if Star Trek was socialist or just post scarcity. Clearly the writers intended a leftist bent, but it could be argued there are just no longer economic constraints.

I think the Trek universe morphed to whatever each episode needed to advance its plot. There is also the issue of what "socialist" means, since there are several incompatible definitions. Several episodes of the original series definitely revolved around economic individualism, such as the independent miners in "Mudd's Women". Or an independent trader whose merchandise includes Tribbles.
