Bankruptcy was expected to happen by many should the Justice Department block Spirit's merger with JetBlue. Justice claimed the merger would reduce competition. After Justice succeeded in blocking the merger they claimed it was “a victory for U.S. travelers who deserve lower prices and better choices.” Chapter 11 should allow Spirit to restructure, but its prognosis is not good. In the mean time the alleged goals of lower prices (which weren't sustainable) and better choices (a crippled choice is one less "better" choice) are gone. And it was all predictable - even by the judge that sided with the Justice Department.
