I have flown these and they are fun planes. I am puzzled by the statement that there was no ELT. Maybe they just mean it did not activate? One reason why I always carry a personal locator beacon (PLB) on my person when flying cross- or back-country.

Odd that they did not try to get onto land and stayed on the aircraft. Of course, maybe that is a prudent course of action not to cross ice if you have a stable, but exposed, platform?
