Question about Sport Pilot Medical

So a few weeks ago I went and visited a flight school knowing very well I have a few medical conditions from my past that would make it difficult for me to obtain a class 3 medical. A few days later I filled out a MedXPress form - I figured "Hey, it's worth a try because I NEED it to fly anything". I was not aware that you could get a Sport Pilot Certification given you don't have a failed Class 3 Medical.

My question is, have I been considered "applied" for the class 3 medical at all? I see some websites stating that you can have never "applied". From what I understand my application will disappear from their system after 60 days. Is filling out MedXPress considered "applying" or is it only considered "applied" once I see an AME and they plug my confirmation number in. Unfortunately it's very difficult for me to find any official requirement documentation from the FAA that isn't a brochure that looks like it's from the 70s.

I don't really want to jump through the hoops of a class 3 medical as this is something I only want to do for fun - I'd even consider gliders, but if I can fly light sport aircrafts that would be even better. So, am I in the clear for sport pilot?
