Removing EXIF data from pictures…

I wanted to start up a pictures thread but would like to strip off the metadata/EXIF first.

I live in the Macintosh universe so no access to windows solutions.

Any suggestions?

I figured out how to do it in Safari on my iPad but it is obscure and I will have to retrace my steps. I know it can be done though….

I found this for MAC by googling. Still can’t figure out my iPad.

Remove EXIF data on Mac

To remove all the metadata attached to a photo on a Mac you will need to use a third-party tool called ImageOptim. This is because Mac only lets you scrub the GPS location data.

To remove the GPS data on your Mac follow these steps:

  1. Open the image in Preview.
  2. Click on Tools> Show Inspector.
  3. Click on the information tab (i).
  4. Click on the GPS tab.
  5. Select Remove location info.
If your image does not have a GPS tab, then it has no location information associated with it.

Wow, I think Apple changed something in the updates. I don’t see how to do it now without installing a third party app.

There is an add-on I could install for the forum software that makes the following claim:
Last, but not least, there is an option to remove any EXIF data from uploaded image files. Many images have geo location data embedded allowing anybody who can see the image to see the location also. This security problem for your users will be closed by this add-on.
Let me know if that would help.

One could always switch universes... ;)

I know,.. not helpful. I wish I could answer your question, but other than using some Apple products in my previous life as a public school teacher, I have no experience with Apple products. For anyone reading the thread who has a similar question on Android systems, an app called "Scrambled Exif" works really well and is available on the Fdroid repository. On a Windows machine, right clicking on the file, then "properties," then "Details," then "remove personal information" does it.

Affinity Photo offers Mac and PC editing apps that can do that.

great editor for approx $35 when on sale, can do most of what photoshop can does, if not better

Thanks for the info. Will definitely get it resolved it seems.

As to having the board scrub metadata, I see no negatives.

I have installed the add-on that can strip EXIF data from attachment uploads. I have enabled automatic stripping of EXIF data in any attachments you upload.

The add-on also adds features that make it easier for users to manage the images and other attachments that they upload to this site.

Thanks, Jim. That's a really nice, considerate feature for a public forum to have.
I just now verified that the add-on removed the EXIF data. I uploaded an iPhone image to a test thread with the add-on enabled and then with it disabled. In each case I then downloaded the image to my iPad photo library and checked the info on the picture. In both cases it showed the image as coming from the Safari browser but all the camera and geolocation info was appropriately stripped when the add-on was running and that info was still there when the add-on was not running.

For those of us who aren’t techies or engineers (looking at you, Rush!) can you explain what this means and why you would want to do it?

Metadata? It’s information attached to a digital picture that you might not want known such as your geographical coordinates, your name, and what device you have.

Edit: It’s there because as a photographer you might want that info attached. But it can get you in trouble, I believe metadata was used against Amber Heard in the Heard/Depp trial.
